Balkans – a new direction for European culture?

In the coming years, subsequent Balkan cities will celebrate the title of the European Capital of Culture, and cooperation between the Western Europe and Balkans is still developing dynamically. We want to take a look at the contemporary Balkans, their cultural scene and, above all, talk about the changes that take place there.

Olimpia Dragouni is a specialist in cultural and Balkan studies. PhD (2015) obtained at the University of Warsaw (Faculty of Artes Liberales) in the field of cultural studies based on thesis on ways of self-identification of Slav-speaking elites from the territory of Ottoman Macedonia in 19th century. Currently she is conducting fieldwork on Greek-Macedonian borderland as associate researcher at Humboldt University of Berlin. Her academic interests include: Islam in the Balkans, inter-faith dialogue, politicization of religion, nationalities and nationalism studies, and discourse analysis. President of the Association Bałkanistyka. Editor-in-chief for the Balkanistyka.org website.

Vanya Grozdanowa is a graduate of Cultural Studies Department at the Sofia University, interested in contemporary arts and independent cultural practices. She has experience in cultural management and curating in the the visual arts field, as part of the team of eXAF.org and the Sofia Underground Performance Art Festival. Grozdanowa is currently working in the programme department of European Capital of Culture Plovidv 2019.

Vuk Radulović is PhD Candidate in Law and EU Integrations. He has been working for European Capital of Culture project from the very beginning for the past five years. He is currently Head of International Relations of the Foundation Novi Sad 2021. He was part of dozens of international and European projects. He has conducted several researches in a field of democracy, EU Integration and reconciliation.

Marko Bilbija is an architect, scenographer and illustrator. Graduated at the University of Belgrade in 2009. Aside from architecture, he actively works in the fields of theatre and film, scenic design, animation, music, illustration and screenwriting. Upon acquiring his master’s degree, moves to Stuttgart and Göppingen, Germany, to work for several architecture studios. Later, he returns back to Belgrade and joins the Association of Serbian Architects. During his work in the field of architecture, he receives several awards, most notably in Germany, for buildings of culture and education. He is currently a PhD student at the University of Belgrade, and head of European Capital of Culture team of the City of Banja Luka, Republic of Srpska, BiH, since 2017.
