Cooperation with the Sister City of Dresden, residency of Maja Dokudowicz

Soon, in autumn, we will prepare another call for the residency in Dresden for artists, curators specializing in workshop graphics from Wroclaw and Lower Silesia.

Maja Dokudowicz

During the many years of cooperation between Wrocław and Dresden, every year there is an artistic exchange of artists connected with sister cities. Last spring, Maja Dokudowicz for a month worked at Grafikwerkstatt - one of the oldest and most important graphic arts studios in Dresden. She writes about the artistic book "City Traces" written within the framework of the residence:

"The aim of this book was to tell a story about the city using fragments found in it, not words. Fragments deprived of their status, unnoticeable, and yet co-creating the public space of the city. I collected such traces in the districts of Altstadt, Blasewitz and Loschwitz. I made all the graphic matrices only from objects found on the streets: The objects I have made include: flower petals, leaves, bark, paper bag, earth, paper packaging, plants, plastic foil, rubber, fireworks packaging, chocolate silverware, string, pill packaging, tape, champagne foil, balloon, links to boats, juice boxes, plastic cup lids, cigarettes, tobacco, grass, tourist leaflets, maps, candy wrappers, ribbons, pillow interiors, cones, moss, feathers, receipts or paper clippings. The direct drawing of cobblestones determined both the shape and size of the matrices and covers. This collection of prints is my reflection of the poetics of everyday life in Dresden. Just as a trace can be a imprint on the snow, so graphics can become a reflection of the shape and rhythm of the city. ”

The residency exchange was supported by Grafikwerkstatt in Dresden, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Wrocław, Engraver’s House, the City Gallery in Wrocław.

We would like to remind you that in April, Nina Holzweg also visited Wrocław as part of the AIR Wro programme.
