DER GEMEINSAME RAUM: exhibition of works by Magdalena Soboń and Barbara Mydlak in Vienna!

“Der gemeinsame Raum” is an exhibition referring to the artistic residency “Master and Student” by Magdalena Soboń and Barbara Mydlak held in September 2016 at the Museum of Papermaking in Duszniki-Zdrój within the program of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016. The first exhibition was organized last year at the Tętno Art and Design Gallery in Wrocław. The second one, hosted by the P_art Gallery in  Vienna, presents a new stage of this artistic collaboration. Thanks to the invitation of the Polish Institute in Vienna, not only Magdalena Soboń and Barbara Mydlak have the opportunity to draw on their common experience of artistic residence and present their work in Wrocław, but also Culture Zone Wrocław may present itself in its a new role. 

Magdalena Soboń studied at the Faculty of Textile Art and Fashion Design at the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Art in Łódź. She is a habilitated doctor of arts and an adjunct professor at the Paper Studio at her home university. Her area of interests embraces handmade paper, unique textile and graphics. Her work has been presented at several individual exhibitions and several dozens of collective ones. She has been awarded with a number of prizes and distinctions, including: a distinction at the Contextile 2016 Contemporary Textile Art Biennial , Portugal (2016); a Grand Prix at the 14th International Triennial of Tapestry, Łódź (2013); a distinction at “From Lausanne to Beijing – 7th International Fiber Art Biennale”, China (2012); the Prize of the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Confederation of Rectors of Lodz Public Universities for young people of scientists and art (2011); a distinction at the 6th International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art, Mexico (2011); the distinction “Lódzkie Eureka” for outstanding artistic achievements (2013, 2011); the bronze medal at “From Lausanne to Beijing – 6th International Fiber Art Biennale”, China (2010).

Barbara Mydlak graduated from the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Art in Łódź in 2017 (the Studio of Intermedia and Spatial Action, the Studio of Animated Film, and the Paper Studio).  She is currently a PhD student at the University of the Arts Poznan. She received a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for the year 2015-2016 and 2014/2015. She has participated in a number of film exhibitions and festivals, including: The International Paper Fiber Art Biennale 2017/2018, NTCRI, Caotun, Nantou, Taiwan (2017); 2nd International Textile Biennial 2017, Haacht, Belgium (2017); Triennale Textile Art of Today, Slovakia / Czech Republic / Poland (2015-2017); 13th Prague Quadrennial Of Performance Design And Space, Shared Space, Music, Weather, Politics, Prague, Czech Republic (2015); XXX Festival Internazionale del Cinema d’Animazione, del Fumetto e dei Games – RIMINI, Italy; 7th International Paris Anmated Film Festival Croq’Anime, France; The Anima-São – International Animation Festival in São Gonçalo, Brazil; XXI Muestra Internacional De Cotometraje Ixtenco Mexico, Mexico; 15th Polish Film Festival Los Angeles, USA. She received a distinction at the 9th International Fiber Art Biennial “From Lausanne to Beijing”, Shenzhen, China (2016).
