Mario Paniego: Imagine a city without adverts

Autor: Culture Zone Wrocław

Fall is definitely an intensive period of the year for AIR Wro. One of projects we’d like to draw your attention to within the next weeks is a residency of Mario Paniego – basque visual and conceptual artist, mainly focused on the urban space of Wrocław – invited thanks to the cooperation between the Culture Zone Wrocław and the Etxepare Basque Institute. Paniego created a series of outdoor interventions in specific locations in the city.

Paniego’s actions are strictly related to the presence of adverts in the public space. The artist decided to explore this topic, analysing both good and bad practices, city policies as well as comparing them with these implemented in his hometown Bilbao. Three art interventions were created as a result of his research.

As Paniego says:

My project tries to make us conscious about the visual noise that accompanies us on the streets of the city on the daily basis. That constant noise, that visual pollution distracts us from ourselves and occupies too much space in our streets and lives.

Seemingly, we obviate these images on many occasions, but they do not obviate us. On the streets, we are constantly being addressed by the announcements without being able to avoid them. Public space serving private interests.

The streets are increasingly owned by advertising, companies and the consumerism; and less and less by people, their relations, nature, architecture, the very essence of the street. There are more and more screens, billboards, placards and all kinds of imaginable advertising media.

Where are Paniego’s interventions loated and when will you see them?

Wrocław, Krupnicza/Podwale Streets

Wrocław, Legionów

Wrocław, Dworcowa Street

You can have a closer look at Paniego’s work at the Łokietka 5 – Infopunkt Nadodrze on 15th November at 19:00. The meeting, including a participation of representatives of local organisations, aims not only to present Paniego’s research, but also to discuss the condition of modern cities. Can we imagine them without publicity?

Documentation of Paniego’s work will be available at the Łokietka 5 – Infopunkt Nadodrze from 16.11 til 30.11 (9:00-17:00).
