Natalia Jerzak in Berlin.

Autor: Culture Zone Wrocław

Natalia Jerzak went to Berlin for her residency at the turn of April and May. Berlin Sessions Residency, host organization located in the German capital city, in the early days organized a workshop and discussion session on the development of the screenprinting project "Sito Ogrodnicy as a social enterprise". During the meeting, results of the project, the obtained grants and their effects, promotional strategies, work methodology with excluded groups, and the model and scope of the project site activities: „MiserArt - the creative zone in the labyrinth of exclusion” were presented.

Issues related to the planned development of "Sito Ogrodnicy" initiative were the main subject of the meeting. Particular attention was paid to the question of what kind of a product is and how it should be valued, also what value it’s standing for. A comparative analysis was made on the basis of examples of already existing social enterprises – successful ones and the ones, which were failures.

Tom Singier (SERIGRAFFEUR) shared his ten years of screen printing experience as an artist and gallerist, initiator of social projects, among the participants of the workshop. He paid attention to the quality control of products performed by members of social enterprises and encouraged to set a standard that will be a recognizable element of the organization.

The Cultural Design team, which draws experience from the Experience Design and Culture Management zones, drew attention to the ethical aspects of production that should be explained in the organization. Who is an artist, artistic director, who is the contractor and how is the gradation of remuneration at the various levels of the organization.

Ece Pazarabasi, lecturer at the Berlin Art Grant Clinic, suggested creating an application calendar for funds for the development of a social enterprise. The proposal mentions not only the use of urban and provincial funds, but also the creation of an international network of initiatives that will aim to exchange knowledge and proven models. Through its international aspect, it will reach European sources of funding and will be able to take part in incubation programs for young enterprises.

The complementary voices are Gwen Retsiemsel, a culture expert and theater producer in an organization working with excluded groups (Theater X); Paulina Olszewska, independent curator and art historian.

The workshop was accompanied by a vegan dinner prepared from products acquired in experimental mode. While searching for ingredients Natalia Jerzak established contact with groups promoting foodsharing and freeganism in Berlin (Stressfaktor, Snack Attack).

The result of the workshop is an in-depth analysis made by specialists in specific fields of the current situation of the "Sito Ogrodnicy" project; a list of ideas and issues that will be further developed during the residency; list of addresses of organizations, initiatives, people with whom the resident will contact and where Natalia Jerzak will be able to present her project "Sito Ogrodnicy".
