Urban landscapes: Amaia Viente and Mario Paniego in Wrocław

Autor: Culture Zone Wrocław

For the fifth year running, two Basque artists will come to Wrocław for a residency organised within the framework of AIR Wro. The creative cooperation between the capital of Lower Silesia and the Basque Country started in 2014 as a part of preparations for the European Capital of Culture celebrations in San Sebastian and Wrocław. The chosen artists are Amaia Vicente and Mario Paniego, whose projects were selected within the framework of an open call launched with the Etxepare Basque Institute.

Amaia Vicente

Mario Paniego

Both residencies are strongly linked to the urban public space. Amaia Vicente will reflect on urban space using sound and geolocation, while Mario Paniego will take a close look at advertising in public spaces. Both of the artists would like to invite the inhabitants of Wrocław to engage in their projects, for example during open workshops or guided tours.

Amaia Vicente: audio landscape in Wrocław

The concept of this project is part of the artist’s PhD research at the University of the Basque Country’s Department of Art and Technology. Residency in Wrocław will include a workshop about recording binaural sound by designing and creating a special system of binaural microphones. Filed work is an important part of Vicente’s work too, as the concept of the project aims at researching of public space by making recording and marking the geolocation of recorded spots. The motive of “listening” and “hearing” is crucial for the artists and is a result of her everyday work methodologies. Residency will be closed by an open presentation with Vicente’s vision of “sound landscape” included.

Mario Paniego: discovering the urban landsape

The artist’s project will take an innovative look at advertising in public spaces. “Urban landscape” will be a starting point for Paniego, but unlike Vicente, he will focus on the visual aspect of it. Based on an initiative aimed at making advertising disappear, he will create a visually impacting project that invites us to see different places around the city in a new light and reflect upon the use of public space, so often monopolized by consumer images and messages. Joined by the local activists and artists, Paniego will confront his initial assumptions with local urban policies, and take a look at good (for example “Cultural Park”) and bad practices in the field. Artist aims at engaging audiences in public debate, hence the invitation to participating in guided tours related to the subject of advertisements in Wrocław. Paniego’s residency, mainly based on research and activist practices, will be summed up during a presentation open to public.
