Soundscape of Wrocław

Year of birth: 1976 Field: Sound art, field recording City: Wrocław

Amaia Vicente has completed a Master's Degree in “Research in Feminist and Gender Studies” and a Master's Degree in “Contemporary, Technological and Performative Art” at UPV-EHU. She is currently developing an international PhD research at the University of the Basque Country in “Art and Technology” Department. In 2018 she has already presented her works in Naples and Vienna and has held different conferences. She participated in collective and solo, national and international exhibitions, organised, among others, by Center d'Art Contemporani, Barcelona; Ars Electronica, Linz; Lab30, Augsburg. Vicente has also obtained numerous scholarships and grant programmes as well as participated in different residencies, e.g. AFO, Architekturforum Oberösterreich, Linz.

During her residency in Wrocław between September and November this year, Vicente developed a methodology of her PhD work: she realised a series of field recordings based on the binaural sound registration system, at the same time marking a geolocation of sources. What she tried to capture, these were changes in our local soundscape, past, present and future of Wrocław heard during interviews with the inhabitants as well as heard by a foreigner, who doesn’t know neither Polish, nor any other from different languages spoken in Wrocław now. During the residency, Vicente led also a workshop, uncovering her artistic practices.

Effects of her work – presented as the installation „Soundscape of Wrocław” – are going to be presented at the WRO Art Center from 21st November to 2nd December as part of the exhibition “Polish Soundscapes”, curated by Marcin Barski and Marcin Dymiter.
