AIR Modernism

Field: Architecture City: Wrocław

In mid-September Levan Asabashvili will take part in the monthly residency project AIR Modernism. Architect of Georgian origin studied architecture at the Tbilisi Academy of Art and Delft University of Technology. In 2007 he co-founded Urban Reactor, an organization dedicated to social and spatial research, debate and education. In 2011 he became a founding member of DoCoMoMo's Georgian section. From 2018 he is a partner at Architecture Workshop.

Levan Asabashvili is interested in the interrelationship of politics and spatial practice. During his research on modernism he decided to focus on the post-war treatment of the historical city center in the USSR and the socialist bloc and the changes that have progressed in the political and economic life of these countries over the years. Levan is focused on how from the 1970's, with the growing bourgois culture the anti-modernist sentiments emerged among the architects and planners and how the historic city centre as a model place for good urban life and design was rediscovered.

The aim of his research is to understand the mechanisms of the degradation of architectural culture of this epoch as well as to challenge the basic principles of the profession elaborated in this period and still dominant in today's debates.

On October 14th there will be a meeting with the participants of the AIR Modernism residency which is a summary of their research on Wroclaw modernism. The event will officially end the stay of foreign residents in Wroclaw. Artist talk will start at 6pm in Fandom, 6 Grunwaldzki Square.
