Nagore Legarreta

Year of birth: 1981 Field: Visual arts City: Wrocław

Nagore Legarreta studied Audiovisual Communication at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Her interest in photography comes from her time working for the local paper “Hernaniko Kronika” (2003-2009). Since then she has been immersed in the world of photography, as both an artist and a teacher. Legarreta has found the perfect means of expression in pinhole photography. Her work has been exhibited in art centres and events including Photoespaña 2016, the Saatchi gallery (London), Muestra de Arte Joven de La Rioja, Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea (San Sebastian), Le Bel Ordinaire (Pau) and Gran Canaria Foto 2016. She is also author of a book “Editopoa” (2011, published by Banizu Nizuke).

The fulcrum of her residential project is the river Odra, which runs through the city of Wrocław. This project is an extension of the work the artist has been doing in the Urumea River in San Sebastian. The Odra has been the witness of the city’s development, its day-to-day business, its history, war, and rebirth. The artist wanted to ask the river how it sees the city and its people. Giving the river the gift of vision, she placed cameras built with metal cans on the surface of the water and watched what the river finds in its path. Legarreta also invited the city’s inhabitants to photograph the river (a geographic, experiential and emotional element that is important to the city of Wrocław and its people), using cameras built previously at workshops. She also invited local musicians to have a dialogue with the Odra, using instruments made of cans and containers, and water from the river.

The results of Legarreta’s work were presented during the international conference “City and Culture” in Wrocław from 20th to 22nd of September 2017.
