Weronika Surma [Culture of Mobility 5.0]

Year of birth: 1987 Field: Ceramics City: Paphos, Kalavas

The residence of Veronique Surma will be related to ceramics, which is the artist's main area of interest. Surma creates ceramic images, on the surface of which she brings together various art disciplines, such as drawing, sculpture and painting, to form a coherent whole. Her works are inspired by the human body, with an emphasis on colour and form. Surma relies on the unique similarity between clay and human matter - mainly its colour and physicality. She is particularly interested in the interdependence between ceramics and people, especially in the relationship between ceramics and women.

The stay in Paphos and the participation in workshops in Kalavasos, run by Andreas Fasoulides, a professional ceramic artist and expert on ancient ceramics, will contribute not only to the broadening and development of issues closely related to her doctoral thesis, but will also allow for further studies on the formation and specificity of ancient ceramic forms (learning about the method of their creation, of the applied technique and materials, characteristic for that place). The artist will use the acquired knowledge and skills already during the workshops, in the course which she will create a collection of ceramic objects, as well as in her future artistic practice and other activities (e.g. publishing an article in “Szkło i Ceamika” magazine, with which Surma has been collaborating for several years).
