Ewa Głowacka

Parallel Structures

Field: Graphic design, activism City: Pilsen

Announced in January 2016 call for graphic designers interested in cooperating with fab labs and open workshops, allowed Ewa Głowacka to go for a two months long artistic residency at  DEPO2015 – creative entrepreneurship center, which aims to create connections between culture, art, business and the creative industry. The center was erected thanks to European Capital of Culture Pilsen 2015, and became headquarters to  OPEN A.I.R – Pilsen-based residency programme, very similar to AIR Wro. In her project Głowacka proposed reaching out to representatives of local informal groups, active on the outskirts of cultural sector, working partly in opposition to the major cultural institutions. She titled their project “Parallel Structures”.

The result of her two months residency is a self-designed zin full of interviews, informations and data compiled by the artist during her stay. Among others, Głowacka interviewed Roman Černík – an activist and one of the co-creators of Pilsen 2015 idea, Helena Dienstbierova Šimicova – the co-founder of Zastávka and co-author of Pilsen's application for the European Capital of Culture, Jakub Mareš – the co-founder of k svĕtu association and Petr Šimon responsible for European Capital of Culture's international projects. All the interviews for “Parallel Structure” showed Pilsen as a city where grassroot initiatives worked in a microscale and the beneficiaries of cultural funds were big institutions running programmes based on the classic understanding of art and culture. Pilsen's alternative scene – although incomparably smaller than in Prague – was progressing independently, but it could also feed off the energy of European Capital of Culture, which contributed significantly the development of small, grassroot initiatives, providing them infrastructural and financial support, and initiating a widespread discussion about culture and cultural management.

After she returned to Poland, Głowacka decided to continue her research in Wrocław. In a series of interviews with activists and creatives from Lower Silesia, she pictured the relationship between local government and representatives of the alternative circles – examples of mediations, dialogue, cooperations, critical opinions and conflicts.  Her zine – avaible online at the PUBLICATIONS tab – was launched within the framework of the first “City and Culture” conference. Promotional event was a starting point for a discussion with Szilvia Nagy from LOCOP, Petr Šimon from ECoC Novi Sad 2021, Roman Černík from Moving Station, Kamila Kamińska from the Association of Critical Education, Hubert Kostkiewicz – widely recognized cultural animator, musicians, journalist related to the independent environment in Wrocław and Maciej Przestrzalski from Radio RAM.
