Year of birth: 1983 Field: Performance City: Wrocław

Daina Pupkevičiūtė – sound artist, performer, organiser and curator of the international festival CREATurE Live Art in Kaunas, Lithuania. Since 2018 she has also curated the Platform for Industrial Culture “Matters”, which is part of the European Capital of Culture Kaunas 2022 programme. In her projects, by working with autobiographical material, Pupkevičiūtė investigates the issues of individual and group identity, belonging to real or imaginary communities, physical and political resistance and its instruments, as well as interpersonal relationships.

The residency of Pupkevičiūtė in Wrocław was divided into two parts. In October 2017, the artist developed her workshop and interests, e.g. in connection with relations between an individual and space, personal stories, official ones and those related to a given place, for example Wrocław. Another activity planned for the residency was the continuation of work on the performative project “Dialogues”, which the artist had previously carried out in Venice, Berlin and Sofia.

In January 2018 Pupkevičiūtė conducted an intensive workshop with the participation of young artists “Autobiography in performance”. “When a man meets a man, there is an opportunity for an intensive exchange: mergers or collisions of (personal) stories, which may or may not have to resound, but still exist suspended somewhere in a common space. Stories about who we are or who we become are often the threads that are most difficult to take up in art, because they involve risk. What if we are not able to keep the distance needed to translate them into visual language? We decided to take this risk and face autobiographical motifs in performance,” explained the resident.
Daina Pupkevičiūtė was selected as a result of the AIR Wro call for artists from the sister cities of Wrocław.
