Alicja Patanowska

Culture of Mobility 9.0

Year of birth: 1983 Field: Visual arts, ceramics City: Jingdezhen

Jingdezhen in China, continuously since 960, is dedicated fully to perfection of one craft - the manufacture of porcelain. Today, the city combines two functions: it nurtures centuries-old tradition and is the world's largest international meeting and work center for artists and designers who use clay in their work.

The residence in Jingdezhen is part of the "FRANZ Rising Star Project" award, which Alicja Patanowska won in 2019. Its particularly important aspect is the possibility to learn techniques of porcelain processing and decoration, often unavailable or not used in Europe. During the residency, from July to August, the artist will learn about Chinese culture and conduct research as part of her doctoral dissertation. The first month will be devoted to her own projects, while the second month will be devoted to the practice of craftsmanship techniques in local ceramic workshops.

Alicja Patanowska is a potter, visual artist and designer who combines glass with porcelain, art with design. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław (2012) and the Royal College of Art in London (2014). She is a laureate of, among others, the "Franz Award" (2019), "Mazda Design Award" (2018), "Gazeta Wyborcza" award "WARTO" (2017), the "must have!" plebiscite (2016) and the British Glass Biennale (2015).
