Another edition of TIFF Residency was organised in 2017. During a three-week stay in Wrocław the artists, invited by the programme team of TIFF Festival, Diana Lelonek (PL), Harmen De Hoop (NL) and Salvi Danés (ES) explored the city focusing on its resources understood as architecture, places, objects and people – that is the elements which contribute to its identity. They paid particular attention to those which due to modernization changes are considered unimportant and were forgotten or rejected. Thinking about re-introducing them into the circulation of the city and their meaning, the artists looked at areas that had undergone the biggest modernization changes; they focused on revitalization of the city and its consequences. In the field of their interest were places that generate a second life for objects: flea markets, street vendor stands, and the citizens and their stories. A collective residency was presented during "Recognized" exhibition held at the Studio BWA Wrocław gallery. The opening included an additional feature – "TIFF Actions: Introducing the Odra River to the gallery with Diana Lelonek" was an extraordinary event, during which the artist and a group of producers pumped the water from the city moat through the cubicle standing in the exhibition space.
Diana Lelonek (born 1988, Poland) – a graduate of the Photography at the Department of Visual Communication on University of Arts in Poznań. Visual artist, photographer. She looks upon photography as a starting point and field of experiment, connecting it with other media. She creates collages, installations and video – installations. Together with Marek Kucharski she became the laureate of the Photomonth in Kraków ShowOFF section this year. She lives and works in Warsaw.
Harmen de Hoop (br. 1959, Netherlands) – visual artist who makes anonymous and illegal interventions in public space. He works on the notion of ‘place’ in the contemporary city, the behaviour of individuals or groups, and the conflicts of interests in public space. With his interventions he breaches the systems and brings forward another, often humane perspective. With this he tries to let people look at themselves in a different way, often with a sense of humor. Documentation of his interventions has been exhibited at the São Paulo Architecture Biennale (São Paulo), CCA (San Francisco), Graham Foundation (Chicago), Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montreal), iGaleria Vaclava Spaly (Prague), ARCO (Madrid), NUART (Stavanger), NIMK (Amsterdam), STROOM (Den Haag), Museum Het Valkhof (Nijmegen), Museum Jan Cunen (Oss). His work is published in international art magazines and books, e.g. in KUNSTFORUM INTERNATIONAL (D), ART das kunstmagazine (D), ART PRESS (F), Metropolis M (NL), STREET ART (Verlag Ullmann), URBAN INTERVENTIONS (Gestalten Verlag), ART & AGENDA (Gestalten Verlag). He gives lectures on the relation between art, sociology, urban planning and architecture.
Salvi Danés (b. 1985, Spain) – artist who makes use of an apparent documentary way of capturing the existing scenes he encounters while playing with the diverse possible readings and interpretations of the narratives depicted. His photographs focus on questions related to representation and subjectivity and was notably part of exhibitions at the International Festival of Photography of Tarragona in Spain (2012); at Circulation(s), Festival de la jeune photographie européenne in Paris, France (2012) and at the Festival für jungen fotojournalismus in Hannover, Germany (2012). In addition, he has been honored by FOAM, Sony World Photography Award, IPA, and many others recognitions.
