The team of the artist-in-residence programme AIR Wro would like to invite you to the premiere of an interview with Volha Martynenka, who participated in the residency project called Belarusian Winter which take a place in November last year. The project was dedicated to Belarusian visual artists who live, study or work in Poland and have been brought here by the revolution. Realised under the banner of AIR Wro, the residency of Culture Zone Wroclaw undertook a reflection on the role of women in the context of the current growing manifestations in Poland, Belarus and many other countries of Europe and the world.

By providing creative space to the invited female artists, the coordinators of the AIR Wro programme had the opportunity to learn about their individual stories and experiences. Thanks to the cooperation with Joanna Synowiec, curator and animator, who conducted a series of interviews with them, we will hear about their memories, personal choices of migration to Poland, artistic inspirations and authorial activities of Belarusian women artists.

Premier

The premiere of the video interview with Volha will take place on 22 March at 5 pm on Culture Zone Wrocław’s YouTube channel. The interview is conducted in Polish with the option of choosing an English translation.

Interview with Volha Martynenka

A visual Belarusian artist, she has lectured on video art at the independent ECLAB university. She comes from Minsk, where in 2016 and 2017 she co-organized the international queer festival TOUCH. In an interview with Joanna Synowiec, she talks about the course of two editions of this event, and also draws the landscape of industrial Minsk from several years ago. Currently, Volha lives in Wrocław, where she creates two-dimensional works. Since, due to the pandemic, the events cannot take place in the same format as before, the artist had to reevaluate her previous practices focused on photography of cultural events and performances. In the interview, Martynenka points out the precarious nature of the artist's profession:

I think not everyone is like David Hockney and not everyone can earn money with their paintings or photos. Unfortunately, many people who do great art are also waiters, programmers, baby sitters.  - confesses the artist.

Culture Zone Wrocław and Fandom invite you to a meeting with the participants of the AIR Modernism residency, which is a summary of their research on Wrocław's modernism. The event officially ends the month-long stay of foreign residents in Wrocław.

Notes from Wrocław's modernism

Three projects by Diana Felber (Germany), Levan Asabashvili (Georgia) and Marta Smektała (Poland), although different in many respects, pay attention to how to study the urban fabric in difficult times. The residents visited the most important points of modernist architecture on the map of Wrocław, worked with archives and, despite pandemic difficulties, participated in city walks, cinema screenings as part of MIASTOmovie festival or events organized by local institutions. We encourage you to talk with residents about their stay in Wrocław and how they used and will use the information collected over several weeks.

Entry and safety of the meeting

The conversation will be conducted in English. Please take precautions, wear masks and disinfect your hands during the meeting. Entry is free, but due to our common safety and limited number of places, registration is required. If you are interested in participating, please send a message with your name and phone number ti the following e-mail address: airwro@strefakultury.pl

Thinking about your safety and therefore the limited number of available places, we decided to also live broadcast the meeting on AIR Wro Facebook. We are also waiting for your questions, which you can ask in your comments.

AIR Modernism

An international and partnership based residency project focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to modernism. The purpose of the residence is to map how Wrocław, Chemnitz and Tbilisi reflected pan-European ideas, i.e. modernism, what was their status in the past and what is it today, and how changes in time and space (East / West) influenced modernism and its perception? The residence is also to network Polish, German and Georgian artistic circles and institutions. Selected residents had the opportunity to conduct a field study on the basis of which they created their own research / art / design projects. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Culture Zone Wrocław, the City of Chemnitz applying for the title of ECoC 2025, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and Tbilisi Architecture Biennial and will be developed until 2025.

The title BODYWHOLENESS was created by combining the words body and whole, in a synthetic way it refers to the issues of the project. It is an attempt to think of man as a holistic being, in which carnality is inseparably intertwined with the soul and mind. Such an attitude is important, especially today, when busy with everyday life, overwhelmed by media messages, bombarded by visual stimuli, we forget about the body, we think only about its external surface - its appearance. We cease to be in the body, to be the body, to be the BODYWHOLENESS. Is it possible to take at least a small step to be closer to the body, as is used to be?

We invite you to take part in the intermedia performance of Mateusz Czyczerski (performance) and Joanna Szproch (camera/photography) on October 4th, at 19:00 in TIFF Center. This action is the result of a meeting between the medium of photography, which is commonly used to aestheticise and objectify carnality with the art of performance based on deep and often extreme contact with the body. It is an attempt to overcome one's own boundaries, both artistic and bodily. The curator of the project is Agata Ciastoń.

The performance will last about 2 hours, it's script and finale is not planned. You can join at any time, as well as leave the room.

The project was created as part of Berlin_forum kultury_Wrocław initiated and implemented by Convivium Berlin e.V., Kulturzug / Train to culture and Culture Zone Wrocław as part of the AIR Wro program – in cooperation with TIFF Center and GLOGAUair. Project BODYWHOLENESS is supported and funded by the Senate of the City of Berlin for Culture and Europe.

Weekend proposition for analog films lovers! This Saturday on 17 August ( 6 p.m.) will be premiered a movie “Window” at the Otwarta Przestrzeń Kultury in the Szczytnicki Park in Wrocław.  Fascinated by the so-called Recovered Territories, Judith Röder decided to show this region using a unique tool: a 16-millimeter analog Bolex camera.

At the beginning of this year, German artist once again visited Lower Silesia, this time as part of a study visit organized thanks to the cooperation of the Wrocław Culture Zone and the Wersja Foundation – one of the two organisations from Wrocław whose projects were included in the AIR Wro programme as part of the last edition of the Competition for NGO.

The screening of the film will be accompanied by a meeting about the material heritage and heritage of Lower Silesia and its affiliation. What social and political processes led to the disintegration of some of the extraordinary monuments of Lower Silesia? Is there a visible transformation of the landscape of our region, which took place during two generations? Who and why is trying to save monuments of memory? We will talk with Maciek Wlazło, the author of the blog Beard of BreslauAngelika Babula from the Anna Foundation in Gostkowo and art historians Agata Gabiś and Jakub Zarzycki about how the places are shaped – both geologically (mines, sandpits, quarries) and culturally (architecture, urban planning) – by their inhabitants.

What does the artist herself say about the film? “Wrocław. Lower Silesia, where the landscape is shaped by various political, cultural and social concepts. Architecture gives testimony, it exists reflecting both memories and memories as well as the present. As an artist, I create the still nature of single frames using silent shots of a still camera. The unstable image of a 16 mm analog camera shows the passage of time. The visible signs of the past are gaining in importance. Dysfunction, loss of usefulness, absence of the original purpose opens the space to beauty.”

Organizers: Strefa Kultury Wrocław and Wersja Foundation

Partners: Wrocławskie Centrum Rozwoju SpołecznegoOtwarta Przestrzeń KulturyBWA Wrocław

Additionally, thanks to the cooperation with the Foundation Instytut Reportażu, Röder’s work will also be presented at this year’s edition of Miedzianka Fest between August 23rd and 25th.

Presentation of a zin, pop-up exhibition and summary of the residence of Irène Mélix, a queer artist, researcher and curator from Dresden. Her stay in Wrocław is connected with the summer edition of the AIR Wro programme, which focuses mainly on the self-publishing scene.

During her residency in Wrocław, Mélix was looking for ads for and by women who were looking for partners, friends or NSA encounters. The ads, collected in one zine and graphically designed together with Ewa Rebeka Służyńska E-R-S, present a continuation of the artist's long-term project. Agata Kalinowska, a Wrocław-based photographer representing the queer scene, also joined Mélix.

5.08 at 18:00 we invite you to Wyspa Tamka, where together with our guests, we sum up the residency of the Dresden-based activist, talk about queer activism and working with archives, and – above all! – we will launch the zine that’s a result of Irène's cooperation with female artists from Wrocław.

The promotion of zine will be complemented by the pop-up sound installation "Lonely Hearts", in which Mélix invites you to immerse yourself in the stories she has collected. These "Lonely Hearts" are women looking for intimacy, love, friendship or simply companionship when walking with their dogs. Some of them love the clubs and nightlife, others are looking for non-smokers only. They travel, experiment, seek adventures or simply search for someone/something. They are artists, lawyers, hedonists. They come from Poland, Germany, UK, Australia, France or are the citizens of the world. Their ads were published in the 1920s in Breslau, Lyon in the 1980s, Cologne in the 1970s or in 2000s in Sydney or Prague – due to the lack of women's titles, they were often published in publications addressed mainly to men. Their stories are everywhere – universal stories about love, life, the need for closeness and intimacy.

„People, places, stories”. Eneka Fernández talks about zines, foto books and self-publishing

El Palentino is a legendary bar in Madrid, captured in photographs by Jonás Bel. This and other photographic books, not only Spanish, will be presented by Eneka Fernández, Creative Library Coordinator at the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Art in San Sebastián (Basque Country), creator of the Fanzinant platform and art historian. The link between the books in her collection is the dimension of their stories, often personal and moving, as they refer to  people, places, journeys and objects. During the meeting, Fernández will show the most interesting ones. She will also talk about the authors of the self-publications and the initiatives she got to know during her residency in Wrocław. It is not a coincidence that TIFF Center has been chosen as the meeting venue – it hosts a substantial collection of photographic books, available for viewing on 9 July at 7 pm.

Self-publishing lab

In 2019, part of the summer edition of AIR Wro has been dedicated to self-publishing. Functioning in the field of photography, visual arts, literature and music, it is both a trend and timeless phenomenon, an element of DIY culture and a model of work, a way to maintain independence and creative self-expression. During her residency in Wrocław, Fernández, along with two other artists – Raisa Álava and Irène Mélix – has become acquainted with initiatives and organisations, and met the artists active in this field.

The Basque Country

The Basques have been invited to Wrocław for another year in a row. In previous years, thanks to the cooperation between the Culture Zone Wrocław (formerly the ECoC Wrocław 2016 Office) and the Etxepare Basque Institute, twelve artists hosted within the AIR Wro programme. Basque artists Eneka Fernández and Raisa Álava were selected for the first time not on the basis of an open call for applications, but the recommendations prepared jointly by both institutions.

Eneka Fernández's residency is organised in collaboration with the Etxepare Basque Institute.

"And buildings are patient listeners", means the summary of "Echoes of Wrocław" - the residence of Anna Kasperska in OP ENHEIM.

On June 25th we invite you to a meeting with the artist in the OP ENHEIM gallery, where at 6 p.m. we will present the sound installation created during her stay in Wrocław. Followed immediately by a conversation with Anna about the project. At 19.30 we will move to the Herz Salon, where the debate Soundscape as a research tool will begin.

25.06.2019, at 6 p.m., OP ENHEIM gallery, first floor | Author's meeting and the presentation of the installation entitled: "Echoes of Wrocław"

Within the framework of the residence, sound compositions were created describing three architectural objects selected by the artist-residential. Oppenheim House, the House of the Ladies of Trzebnica (Romanesque House) and the Monopol Hotel. These are peculiar radio plays, consisting of sounds of everyday life, successively defined by the functions that these buildings have performed over the centuries. Three locations were chosen for the project because of their diverse and multifaceted historical identity and significance for the city.

On 25 June they will sound in the OP ENHEIM gallery and the author's commentary will be accompanied by the author Anna Kasperska. It will be an opportunity to ask about the idea of creating sound compositions based on historical context, but also to listen to the works prepared by her during the residency.

25.06.2019, 7.30 pm, Salon Herz, V floor | Debate Soundscape as a research tool within the framework of Anna Kasperska's residency entitled "Echoes of Wrocław"

Participants: Robert Losiak, Maciej Bączyk, Justyna Stasiowska
Moderator: Sławomir Wieczorek

Over the years, architectural structures change their functions by adapting to the current needs of people and the times in which they live. Architecture and its soundspace is a silent witness to urban history whose memory - metaphorically speaking - is inscribed in the walls.

And the buildings are patient listeners. From day to day, from month to month, new sounds are created, which resound and then disappear in brick structures. Sound - as one of the available tools - gives us the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the past and read the space, at the same time being an exceptional material noting the specificity of a given historical period and a specific place, i.e. the intangible cultural heritage.

During our conversation, together with the invited guests, we will reflect on the concept of the urban audiosphere and ask a question about its meaning, not only in the context of creative expression, but also in the context of an important aspect of research.

The number of seats at the lectures is limited. If you are interested in participating, please send your request to: visit@openheim.org.

The residence is organised by OP ENHEIM as part of the #ComptetitionforNGO, AIR Wro's programme.

The AIR Wro Talks 4.0 conference will finish with the opening of Dominika Kulczyńska's installation Migratory Species at the TĘTNO Art and Design Gallery. The exhibition summarises the next stage of the work of the Wrocław-based artist and designer on the subject of migration, borders and movement. Admission to the opening is free, the number of participants is limited.

Registration at www.airwrotalks.conrego.com >

We can view migration in terms of moving from rural to urban areas, from cultivated fields to forests, or changing orbit. It is always characterised by displacement, change of the environment and crossing a certain border, which often doesn't actually exist. Dominika Kulczyńska touched upon the subject of travelling distances during her residency at Oficinas de Convento in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, completed as part of AIR Wro in 2017. According to the artist, migration can be approached from many different perspectives, for example in the context of the birds in the city, including strictly protected and endangered species. In the spring of 2019, she continues this theme in the form of an exhibition and artistic action.

Migratory Species refers directly to the habits of the common house martin and its nest building techniques, which the artist reproduces herself. One of them will be displayed in the gallery space along with the documentation of the process. This way, the designer wishes to establish a certain "inter-species dialogue". Since these birds make their nests from clay, the resulting object will de facto become an artistic installation. The exhibition will also feature vessels, whose shape and form are directly taken from or inspired by the shape of nests of migrating birds from our geographical area.

The exposition will be complemented by a photograph taken by the Wrocław artist in October 2015 on the Croatian-Hungarian border, during a volunteer trip to support groups of refugees there. The photo shows a close-up of the ground trampled by thousands of people every day in the area of the so-called "green mile", i.e. the safety zone between countries, which these groups had to cross on foot.

The exhibition at the TĘTNO Art and Design Gallery will be accompanied by workshops at the Studio Zakwas. The artist will invite the residents of Wrocław to join her and make nests, which they will then be able to take home and place them in a chosen point in the city. Through this action she will make a symbolic "gesture of inviting" the birds back to the cities.

Migratory species – the exhibition and workshops – are just a small part of the project carried out in collaboration with the team of ornithologists from the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, in which the artist invites the viewer to take a closer look at the situation of the city birds in Wrocław.

The first day of the international conference AIR Wro Talks 4.0 will conclude with a powerful musical accent. On 28 March, we invite you to Barbara for a special concert by Piotr Damasiewicz, a Wrocław-based artist, who will present a piece for trumpet and piano, composed for this occasion. Admission is free, the number of seats is limited.

The registration form is available at www.airwrotalks.conrego.com/en.

Piotr Damasiewicz’s work draws on the language of jazz, 20th-century classical music and European improvised music. During the concert he will present a specially composed piece for a partly prepared trumpet and piano. It will use the sound of these instruments in a both conventional and contemporary way, resulting from the experimental approach to their structure. In its content, it will address the concept of a city in which the national and cultural boundaries disappear and intersect, basing on the example of Wrocław and Novi Sad.

Between December 2018 and January 2019 Damasiewicz stayed in Novi Sad as an artist in residence. He worked there on his new material, taking inspiration from the atmosphere and acoustics of historic temples, such as the synagogue, as well as addressing the contemplative and meditative human sphere. The choice of space is to emphasize the character of Damasiewicz's musical manifestation as a symbolic act of intercultural reconciliation. The activities involving local artists in the field of contemporary art in its broadest sense carried out during the residence facilitated an attempt to get to know and understand the city that Novi Sad has become – the capital of the multicultural and autonomous province of Vojvodina, and in 2012 also the European Capital of Culture.

AIR Wro Talks 4.0

The concert accompanies the fourth edition of the international conference AIR Wro Talks 4.0, addressed both to experts and practitioners involved in the field of culture, who are interested in current socio-cultural phenomena. The main theme of this year's edition are "boundaries". Their diverse meanings will be explored during discussion panels, lectures and workshops by distinguished guests – the representatives of Polish and European cultural organisations and institutions. The issues raised during the conference include topics of significance not only for the cultural community, but also for the citizens of 21st-century Europe. We will talk about the impact of Brexit on the European community, the role of national institutions in cultural promotion, the need to create barrier-free culture and ways to fight hate speech.

About movie "PressPausePlay"

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunities. But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity? This is the question addressed by “PressPausePlay”, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world's most influential creators of the digital era.

Entrance is free. Meetings are held in Barbara (Świdnicka 8B).

The partner of the event is Wrocławskie Centrum Rozwoju Społecznego.

Moderator: Adrian Siegle – born in Germany, raised in Portugal and currently living in Wroclaw. He graduated as a music teacher, but he’s always been involved in cultural events. Prometheus - spectacle

An acrobatic and dance performance, where the story is presented using broadly understood movement – dance, acrobatics, theatre of shadows, equilibristics and Eastern martial arts. The show revolves around the conflict between Zeus and Prometheus. To use a fantastic metaphor, this performance should be watched as if the actors’ voices were taken from them, but instead they were given wings.

MOA is a britpop project counting five people with their leader being the tender-and-warm-voiced Marta Fitowska, who is also responsible for their lyrics. Like everything in my artistic activity - working with visualizations and video began with attempts to create theatrical space with the help of a moving image.

Spirit Fingers - a jazz supergroup

Founded in the US and lead by the pianist Greg Spero. The music of this formation merges modern sound, strong pop melodies, mastery and challenging improvisations, resembling groups such as GoGo Penguin and E.S.T.
Their debut album Spirit Fingers released in 2018 and comprising twelve pieces is a combo of polirhythm with innovative improvisation. It exhibits elements of jazz fusion of the 70’s synthesised alongside with today’s sensitivity of pop.

Band:

Greg Spero – piano, keyboards
Dario Chiazzolino – electric guitar
Hadrien Feraud – bass guitar
Mike Mitchell – percussion
Laura Adel – visualisations

Przemek Paśko and his band Co To will join us at Impart once again. The musicians performed here after the première Błędne koło, and now they are going to come to us with the material from the new album – Druga. The album has a new character, it was recorded with jazzmen. It is electric, dynamic and romantic, you can get to know us from a different perspective, and you can take us home, thanks to the album, said the band’s frontman. Błędne koło was made out of fascination with Grechuta, Soyka, as well as Raz Dwa Trzy. The new album does not depart from these inspirations, but leads the band towards new directions.

Squid is a band of Kuba Łakomy and Tomek Grządkowski, who – fascinated by the Jim Jarmusch's film Only Lovers Left Alive and its soundtrack – decided to form a band. Following this path, the musicians published two EPs and are currently preparing material for their first full album, which will be released by the regime brigade label – an artistic collective and a music publishing house from Wrocław. The foundation of their music is anxiety, characteristic of shoegaze, combined with dragged ambient chillwave drone sounds. Squid’s compositions could successfully serve as the soundtrack of many film productions. The priority of the concert will be to create high quality video recordings inspired by old recordings on VHS tapes.

Trzech wyjątkowych instrumentalistów spotka się na sali teatralnej Impartu, by zaprezentować fuzję indywidualnych doświadczeń muzycznych. Daniels, Możdżer i Oleszkiewicz to utytułowani jazzmani o niebanalnych życiorysach artystycznych i ugruntowanej pozycji.

Eddie Daniels jest amerykańskim gigantem klarnetu. W trakcie swojej ponad pięćdziesięcioletniej aktywności fonograficznej zarejestrował niemal trzydzieści płyt autorskich, a także brał udział w niezliczonych sesjach nagraniowych w charakterze sidemana.

Three outstanding instrumentalists meet in a theatre rehearsal room of Impart to represent fusion of individual, musical experiences. Daniels, Możdżer and Oleszkiewicz are entitled jazz musicians with a strong position and unusual artistic biography.

Eddie Daniels is an American leading clarinet player. During his 50 years of experience with jazz he has released almost 30 original albums and took part in many recording sessions as a sideman. He collaborated with Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Arturo Sandoval and Freddie Hubbard.

Leszek Możdżer started his jazz career in a band of Polish clarinet player Emil Kowalski. Despite his experience he works rather rarely with other clarinet players. During an impressive carrer his features of being musical leader let him take part in numerous, atypical projects. His artistic achievements are often described as versatile and flexible.

Darek Oleszkiewicz is a bass player from Wrocław.30 years ago he moved to the West Coast of the United States and soon received a full scholarship from California Institute of The Arts. For the past three decades he has become an outstanding educator and excellent sideman. He took part in numerous album sessions and recorded with Brad Mehldau, Charles Lloyd, Bennie Maupin and Peter Erskine.

EABS is a septet from Wrocław; they’re one of the most influencial groups among Polish jazz stage.
Its album called Repetitions (Letters to Krzysztof Komeda) has given the group publicity and prestigious prizes. As far as the tribute to Krzysztof Komeda seemed to be a duty for each jazz generation in Poland, mixing it with hip hop, R&B, funk and soul came out as a pleasant suprise and reached a larger audience. In 2017 it received an award Mateusz (a prize given by Polish Radio Three) in the Jazz event category. Moreover, in last year’s survey made by Jazz Forum Magazine they won the first place in categories such as New Hope and Electric band, and the bandleader was nominated for Paszporty Polityki (Polityka’s Passports).

This American band has been around for many years and is very unique in its own way. It has around 40 years of experience on stage, over 30 albums and millions of fans all over the world. Without a question, it all makes the band legendary. It mainly focuses on very energetic jazz fusion and countless inspirations incorporating jazz. What’s more, although the 80’s were strongly indicating back to acoustic jazz, it didn’t stop the band from developing towards jazz-rock. Betting on jazz-rock resulted in 2 Grammy awards, 13 Grammy nominations and best-selling albums (e.g. Shades). However, its numerous albums do not convey the atmosphere that can be felt during Yellowjackets’ concerts. Well planned musical compositions, perfect instrumentalists and inimitable sound create an unforgettable experience. The band will present material from its last album called Cohearence.

Trylobity Group is a brand new project by three, brilliant musicians related to Wrocław: Sławek Dudar – alto saxophone player, known from an original quartet (albums called Brand New World and Inside City), Janusz Brych – an experienced instrumentalist and long-time teacher from Karol Lipiński Academy of Music and Mateusz Maniak – a versatile drummer who deals amazingly with both jazz and classical music. Although musicians were associated with Wrocław in different ways, it is Trylobity Group that’s brought them together as a group. Last year the band released its first record called Burning Stones. The album reflects relatively short recording session which mainly makes the audience more curious about the musicians’ work. Among 7 compositions by Brych and Dudar, the trio presents a wide range of sounds – starting with very energetic pieces, through trance tracks and finishing off with some lirycal elements.

He’s a multi-talented New York bass player whose work consists of mainstream, funk, fusion and free jazz. His career started in the 80’s and since then he collaborated with jazz music icons: Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner, Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Kenny Garrett, The Marsalis Family, Herbie Hancock and many more. The American instrumenalist strongly emphasises that sharing music with audience brings him joy and that he’s against any types of division in Art. He’s well-known as an innovator and virtuoso who plays piccolo bass, five-string bass, fretless and double bass). His very first album as well as last year’s Music From Our Soul was released by Blue Note Records label. His latest record was a project which involved artists with whom he’s been working through his career (Stanley Jordan, Phaorah Sanders, Jeff “Tain” Watts and more). It’s a young group from The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice and last year’s Grand Prix Jazz on the Odra Festival Prize winner. Its leader – Adam Jarzmik – graduated from the piano classes and currently studies music composition and arrangement in Katowice. He calls the quintet his dream team although the group started to play together by a coincidence – they met before the second International Jazz Composition Contest in Katowice. Jarzmik got an award during the contest and has decided to keep on composing with the musicians he met. The band members admit they are competitive and thanks to that, the quintet has received many awards and diplomas. The band has won many prizes in Sibiu Jazz Festival, Zilina International Jazz Contess and Blue Note Competition. The group will perform with special guest Mike Moreno – an American guitar player, who inspired Adam Jarzmik while working on the first album.

We will also hear guitarist Krzysztof Ścierański in the Laboratorium project, Sławek Jaskułke's sextet, saxophonist Maciej Sikała, Bronisław Suchanek’s trio, as well as the Wójciński Brothers with drummer Krzysztof Szmańda. Marius Neset represents the scandinavian music scene and despite his young age, his achievements are critically acclaimed. This talented saxophone player, composer and arranger was born in Norway but lives permanently in Denmark. He started his cooperation with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra 7 years ago and back then, thanks to his work with Molde Jazz Festival, the first material started to evolve. Then a fruitful welcoming of his new repertoire resulted in an album called Lion released by a prestigious ACT record label. Since then Neset made 3 more original albums for Munich label: Pinball, Snowmelt and Circle of Chimes.

Those albums provided him with a strong position on the international stage. Tondheim Jazz Orchestra is a renowned formation, which is appreciated not only due to its musical skills but mostly for the creativity and individualism of each member of the group. Now it reaches the top spot of the European charts. The creativity of artists who built the Norwegian collective led to 20 varied albums and many collaborations with popular jazz singers from the USA, among others, with Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Joshua Redman and the greatest Scandinavian musicians: Sidsel Endersen, Erlend Skomsvoll and Per Zanussi.

The concert, accompanying the next meeting in the AIR Wro Talks series, presents a summary of Berlin residency of Paweł Szroniak’s, in the course of which the Wrocław-based curator followed the most important actors dealing with experimental music (i.a. Errant Bodies, Labor Sonor, Quiet Cue, Ausland), attempting to define the mechanisms that influence the shaping of a so-called “music scene” – particularly non-hierarchical communities situated at the margins of official culture.

The participants of the event are Burkhard Beins and Marta Zapparoli, two prominent artists of a well-established position in the music circles. Although since 2010 they both have been members of the group Splitter Orchester (an orchestra of 24 members performing improvised music), the performance at Proza will be their first concert as a duo.

Burkhard Beins – German experimental composer and improviser. He is known from his innovative use of percussion prepared with unusual objects. In the recent years he has also worked with analogue synthesizers and created sound installations.

Marta Zapparoli – sound artist, improviser and performer based in Berlin. Her current music work refers to such issues as acoustic ecology, field recording, noise pollution, EMF, as well as the use of radio waves (especially short waves, Morse code and myriameter waves).

The first lecture of the Academy after the winter break will focus on growing herbs at home. We will get familiar with the most important species and methods of cultivating them inside our homes.

The Academy of a City Gardener is a series of meetings addressing the topics related to plants. During the meetings you will get familiar with the basic concepts of choosing the plants, diseases and pests of ornamental plants, designing home flowerbeds and creating floristic compositions.

During the meetings we provide you with seedlings, seeds and information on how to tame your favourite plants. The theoretical part is usually followed by a workshop which complements and develops each meeting. Plant breeder skills are not required.

The meetings are run by Filip Marek – a gardener, florist, teacher. He teaches about ornamental flowers and floristry in Wrocław, Opole and Poznań. He specialises in plant scenography, interior arrangements and urban greenery design. He collaborates with the most important Polish fashion designers.

Pileas, monsteras, orchids, ferns, crassulas and other succulents are the heroes at our homes – they filter the air of impurities, produce oxygen and improve our mood. After the winter break let’s meet and embroider our beloved potted plants. The workshop will be also a great opportunity to extend our knowledge on embroidery techniques.

The series of meetings “Let’s embroider” is open for everyone who wants to develop their skills or learn something new. The meetings will address topics such as kitchen tapestries, clothing repairs, and even methods of embroidering banners. We will get to know techniques, professional literature and contexts in which embroidery is used.

The workshops will be run by Olga Budzan – an ethnologist and a textile designer. She illustrates books. She runs drawing and handicraft workshops all over Lower Silesia.

Participation in the workshop is free of charge, however, booking a place is obligatory: haftujemy@strefakultury.pl

A series of meetings addressing the topics of food and cooking, comes back to Barbara after the winter break. The first meeting this year is going to be a confectionery workshop focused mostly on chocolate truffles. Marika Auksztulewicz from the Jadka restaurant will be a guest of the meeting.

The main idea behind the series is looking for inspiration for our own culinary experiments. A confectioner, a bartender, food photographers and a farmer will help us to discover flavours hidden in the world around us. During the meetings consisting of two parts: theoretical and practical, the participants will find out how to develop our senses with more awareness, where to look for knowledge and how to behave in our own kitchens in a more professional manner

The series will be run by Agnieszka Szydziak – PR and marketing specialist. A co-organiser and a PR manager of Gastro Nocki – the biggest night culinary event in Wrocław. An editor-in-chief of “Have a Bite Wrocław”, she writes for culinary magazines.

In 2017 the Saturday family workshops in Barbara gave us a chance to create, in an unconventional way, large format works using paper, cardboard and paints. The purpose of the workshops ran by Katarzyna Bury was creative fun and collaboration.

The workshops were dedicated to children aged between 4 and 10 and their parents. The participants worked together and freely in a huge Culture Room in Barbara. The reason for creating our project was a very limited possibility to develop spatial imagination in Polish schools and nursery schools. It required cooperation between children and parents. During the meetings we focused on underwater light, city, alphabet, and even theatre.

Katarzyna Bury / Tekturowo – a psychologist, a pedagogue, a cultural activities organiser. She conducts large format structural and manual workshops.

A recognised singer, producer, and composer will perform in Impart the songs from his first solo album “Oldschool”. It’s an album created against the trends, for all those who miss ambitious pop music. During the concert we will listen to pieces of many different styles.

Kuba Badach is a recognised Polish vocalist, instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and music producer. He is a frontman of the Poluzjanci (former Polucjanci) band and a member of The Globetrotters group. After nearly 30 years spent on the music stage, hundreds of concerts and musical collaborations with a number of the most celebrated stars of Polish music industry, dozens of albums recorded with many different artists, he decided to create an album entitled “Oldschool”, the very first, original album in his career.

The album gives us a chance to listen to the characteristic, jazz sound of Kuba Badach’s band, known from the album “Tribute to Andrzej Zaucha. Obecny”, i.e. Jacek Piskorz and his piano, Michał Barański and his double bass, and Robert Luty and his drums, with the additional sound of a guitar played Łukasz Belcyra, Hammond organ played by Marcin Górny, and the wind instrument section of Maciej Kociński (saxophone) and Piotr Schmidt (trumpet). The elements of 70s, 80s and 90s style are also detectable. In many of the songs, Badach does not limit himself to a role of a composer and a singer, but also plays on a bass guitar and keyboard instruments.

A big celebration for all book lovers. Its purpose is to promote reading and present the works of foreign writers, which very often has not been published yet. During one evening, the citizens of Wrocław will have a chance to listen to modern prose interpreted by prominent culture creators (actors, writers, journalists), visit places that are usually impossible to access, and most of all, get to know new, good literature.

Pracownia Komuny Paryskiej 45

Founded in 2015, as well as other activities which were a part of European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016, demonstrated a huge potential of the “Triangle” citizens. Second edition of a free series of meetings for university and high school students. The lectures and discussions will focus on a diverse range of topics, including  difficult ones, such as dilemmas of neighbourhood in the city space. We will try to diagnose the problems and challenges faced by Wrocław.

As a result of the political and economic processes in Ukraine, we are dealing with a wave of migration to the West. Wrocław, like other Polish cities, has been becoming a living place for many inhabitants from the East. We have new neighbours, who speak a language that is related to ours, and yet foreign, with complicated past that connects our nations. Now they want to build their future in the city on the Odra River. During the meeting we want to talk about migration and the way it changes the country and its society, how it affects everyday life, personal contacts, economics or legal and administrative solutions. High school and university students are invited to join us. Those, who will participate in all four meetings of the City Academy will receive a special certificate.

The meeting will be hosted by Olga Chrebor and Sergii Kulchevych.

The series of meetings was created by Joanna Panciuchin, Piotr Jakub Fereński, Ph.D. and Rafał Nahirny, Ph. D.

Partner of the series: Urban Studies – a major at the Institute of Cultural Studies of the University of Wrocław

The outstanding Polish pianist Kuba Stankiewicz will play a unique jazz concert together with Wojciech Pulcyn on double bass on the Impart stage in Wrocław. The event will also feature a special guest – Tina Raymond, an extremely creative American drummer.

Tina Raymond (USA) graduated from the California Institute of the Arts, where she studied both African music and jazz percussion. After graduation, she quickly made a name for herself as a very creative, top-tier American drummer. To date, she performed with such artists as Bobby Bradford, Bennie Maupin, Emil Richards, Art Lande and Vinny Golia.

The blues jam sessions, which were inaugurated in January 2011, became a regular event in Impart’s Autograf Club at Mazowiecka 17.  Once in a month on Tuesday, they attract a very large group of regular regulars, fans and of good ol’ blues, as well as fans and friends of musicians - mainly the HooDoo Band, who enrich the events with their rhythm and style.

The idea behind the meetings is to recall the spirit of legendary music clubs and create an open and friendly stage for young – and older – musicians from Wrocław.

The evenings are hosted by artists known from bands such as HooDoo Band, The Crackers, Outsider and Stare Dobre Małżeństwo:
Tomasz Nitribitt – charismatic vocalist and harmonica player with a unique voice
Bartosz „Mr Shuffle” Niebielecki – one of the founders of HooDoo Band, composer, producer and – most importantly – drummer
Bartek Miarka – guitarist looking for inspiration in blues, rock, soul, jazz and ethnic music
Andrzej Stagraczyński – bass player connected with the musical circles in Wrocław for many years
Piotr "Święty" Świętoniowski - keyboard player, composer and arranger

Such a large dose of blues is a treat for the ear and – thanks to artists, who take part in these sessions – also an incredible dose of positive energy. Sometimes, the sessions run for many hours...

Those writing about contemporary art as often as visual artists themselves have a hard time defining what performance art is. For the sake of this workshop we will define it simply as live art by an artist (as brilliantly simplified by RoseLee Goldberg), performed directly to the audience, which is perceiving it in real time. Performance art has four dimensions: time + space + body (of the artist) + body (audience as a whole and as a group of individuals). Thus it is defined by relation(ship)(s) and therefore, by its very nature, it is live art. As such it is open and fluid as it engages in a variety of strategies, medias, materials, subject and explores the viability of a dialogue, protest, declaration, artistic gesture, public sculpture etc.

Impart on Mazowiecka Street still attracts the audience with Leningrad – a music play based on the songs by the legendary Russian rock group with the same name. The uncompromising lyrics by Sergei Shnurov translated by Michał Chludziński, a great play directed by by Łukasz Czuj, masterfully performed by actors and singers – Mariusz Kiljan and Tomasz Mars – as well as seemingly endless energy of live musicians – all of that combines into an amazing play that has the audience at the edge of their seats.
